Susan, a.k.a Su-Zen, creates wearable pieces of art which exemplify her philosophy of life. You will find threads of simplicity and elegance running through the items she creates. The material she chooses, whether stones, beads or fiber, are examples of her love of beauty, form, texture, and color.
Susan began studying silver-smithing at the Yorktowne Chapter of the Guild of Craftsman in 1993. She studied under the tutelage of Ross Raffensberger for 3 semesters, followed by Guild teachers Carole Nichols and Bill Thompson. Her silver jewelry was juried and passed the standards held by the local Guild.
A passion for knitting began 45 years ago. She is self-taught and has literally knit hundreds of sweaters, and hundreds of hats. Her pieces are representative of unique personal designs, without the use of patterns.
In 1997 she joined her daughter, Bethany, in forming Open Eye Adornments. They participated as vendors in the Riverwalk Arts Festival in York for several years. Open Eye Adornments expanded, opening a stand in Central Market House in 1999. Later they joined other artists to form an independent boutique called The Studio now located on North Beaver St.
Presently Suzen’s work can be seen at Uncommon Threads in York, Terra Opera in York, and the Independent Artists Gallery in Santa Fe, NM on San Francisco St and at Tribes Coffee Shop off Cerrillos Rd. In Santa Fe.
